Omega 2226.80.00 with mismatched caseback and series numbers up for Auction

According to the clear and closeup caseback image, number 08974 out of 10007 is currently up for Auction on eBay.

Further down, an image from the paperwork that acoompanies the Omega 2226.80 when originally purchased from an Authorized Dealer appears. It boldly reads, "Your watch is unique and carries the number: 08971 / 10'007" under a watch image.

That's right, "8974" on the caseback, versus "8971" on the writing.

As much as that says to would-be buyers of any Limited Series wristwatch in terms of due diligence, I'm even more struck by the Bidding. With now 1 day, 12 hours remaining, this Auction has received 26 Bids from six unique prospects. Many are from a 0-Feedback person from whom 52% of the Bidding activity is with this Seller.

But two others have quite a bit stronger histories. Pricing hit $1,456.00 from someone with a feedback of 1499. The current highest Bid, of $1,500.00, is from a 265-Feedback Bidder.

The watch is currently located in Fair Oaks, California [United States].

On March 28, 2006, Omega SA released its first official press announcement on the Seamaster reference 22268000 limited edition wristwatch.

007 is back and this time with a new look. Carrying on the tradition of the Seamaster James Bond watch, this new stainless steel limited edition model is a professional diver’s watch with the master spy’s inimitable touch. Fans of Bond will instantly recognize the spiral motif embossed on the dial as seen in the opening credits of the films as well as the diminutive 007 numerals at the end of the seconds hand. This is also one of the first James Bond watches to be equipped with the technically advanced Co-Axial Escapement.

Limited to 10,007 pieces this exclusive Seamaster has more Bond features than previous models. The James Bond Limited Series adopts the classic design features such as the distinct case design, the curved horns and contrasting polished and brushed surfaces as well as the blue 'Bond' bezel and dial. In true Bond style, eye-catching good looks are combined with a high specification precision machine. The James Bond Limited Series meets with the requisites of a professional diver’s watch as well as passing the rigorous COSC tests that assure its precision as a chronometer. As is required of a professional diver’s watch it is water resistant to 300 metres (1000 feet) and is equipped with a helium escape valve positioned at 10 o’clock. The helium escape valve allows any atoms of this gas to escape during decompression, a vital function when using a diving bell, as small helium atoms are able to penetrate the case and could cause the watch to explode when expansion occurs during decompression. Other features that distinguish this as a professional diver’s instrument are the screw-in crown and screw-down case back, the uni-directional rotating bezel featuring a luminous dot and the highly visible hands.

The skeleton hour and minute hands are coated with the luminous material SuperLuminova and the seconds hand has a red tip. The 007 logo at the end of the seconds hand sweeps across the spiral motif embossed on the blue dial, making this the most 'Bond' of all the Seamasters to date. The applied hour markers and date window at 3 o’clock ensure that Her Majesty’s secret agent keeps all his appointments and the domed scratch-resistant sapphire crystal has received an anti-reflective treatment for optimum clarity.

The 41mm stainless steel case houses the Calibre 2500 self-winding movement with a 48-hour power reserve. It is also one of the first of these robust watches to incorporate a Co-Axial escapement; the proprietary Omega technology that considerably reduces friction in the heart of the watch mechanism and offers improved long-term reliability and accuracy. Performance is further improved by a free-sprung balance that allows for more precise adjustments of the watch. The mechanism is sealed into the case by a screw-down back on which the series number of each limited edition watch is engraved as well as an embossed 007 gun logo.

The James Bond Limited Series comes on a comfortable brushed and polished stainless steel bracelet and is fitted with a safety clasp with the engraving of the 007 logo.

Number 4029 is currently available there through at an Authorized Dealer.

In fact, this Omega reference 2226.80 "James Bond" Seamaster is one of only two remaining 007 Limiteds on the island. The other is a "James Bond 007 Collector's Piece."

We confirmed yesterday by phone that number 04196 remains available at an Authorized Dealer in Ann Arbor, Michigan [United States].

That makes for a rather remarkable find, given that this piece was released in connection with the first appearance of Daniel Craig as James Bond 007, in Casino Royale.

Apparantly it's just slipped under folks' radars.

This Limited Series piece is brand new, with all papers, packaging, and full-term on warranty.

The 2220.80.00 worn by Daniel Craig as James Bond in Casino Royale differed only cosmetically from this special edition. Notably, on the dial face, the counter-balance on the second-hand, and in its caseback design layout (including sequential numbering).

Those areas are nicely highlighted in this composite. Again, the 007 gunbarrel logo (trademark Eon Productions) is used throughout under license. Press Kit dated March 28, 2006.

Antiquorum Auctioneers conducted a thematic auction titled, "Omegamania," through which properties of various owners of "Important Omega Collectors' Timepieces" were offered for sale.

This was conducted on Saturday, April 14, and Sunday, April 15, 2007, in Geneva, Switzerland, at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel du Rhône.

Lot 297 is listed under Chapter XI, it's "Special Series" section, and is captioned, "Seamaster - 007, No. 1." This watch is described as follows.

Omega, 'Seamaster, Co-Axial, Professional, 300m,' No. 1, movement No. 81735282, Ref. SU 368.1631. Made in a numbered edition of 10007 examples in 2006, to coincide with the release of the film 'Casino Royale.'

Fine, center seconds, self-winding, water-resistant, stainless steel diver's wristwatch with graduated blue bezel for decompression timing, date and a stainless steel Omega bracelet with deployant clasp. Accompanied by the original box, Certificate of Authenticity, and 3-year Omega guarantee....

Three-body, solid, polished and brushed, lyre lugs, unidirectional revolving blue bezel with scalloped edges, graduated to 60 minutes, gas escape valve at 10, crown protected by crown guard at 3, screw-down back numbered and engraved, sapphire crystal.... Matt black with applied silvered 'shutter' motif, luminous steel-framed dot indexes and baton quarters, outer minute/seconds divisions, applied steel Omega symbol and 'Seamaster' painted in red at 12 o'clock, date aperture. This watch was launched in 2006, to coincide with the release of 'Casino Royale.' It is the first James Bond limited series of watches using the famous Omega co-axial technology. The 'Seamaster Professional' has been the choice of Bond since Pierce Brosnan wore one in the 1995 film 'Golden Eye.'
